8 Days Voyage to Margherita

Famously called the “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzori Mountains range from tropical forests to alpine meadows to snow.  Not for the faint of heart, this incredible expedition will take you from the foothills of the mountains to its highest point at Margherita Peak.  Along the way, nature will beckon as you camp at the park’s various huts and wake to an African sunrise on top of the world.

**** This excursion in the Rwenzori Mountains is physically demanding; as such, this safari is recommended only for adults with good health and fitness levels.  Shorter hikes in the Rwenzori Mountains are also available for travelers seeking a visit to this incredible mountain range.

SAFARI ITINERARY

Morning transfer to Kasese driving through Mubende, and FortPortal towns. Have lunch in Fort Portal after which you will continue to Kasese. Final purchase for fresh fruits, vegetables and a few other necessities that you might need for the hike.

Dinner and overnight at Margherita Hotel.

Transit Time: 7 Hours

In the Morning, travel to Nyakalengija. Do the weighing as well as allocation of porters before the start of the mountain climbing which takes about 5 hours to the first hut. Serving of Picnic lunches will be done prior to climbing through the moss to the Nyabitaba Hut (2650metres).

After breakfast, we will set off on the day’s hike, crossing the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the exquisite Moboku River.  The hike will take us through fields of the Rwenzori’s unique flora, including Giant Lobelia and Giant Heather before bringing us to the John Matte Hut (3350 m) for dinner and an overnight stay.

We will continue our ascent through the Rwenzori mountains as we cross through Giant Groundsel, Giant Heather, and Giant Lobelia, passing a rock formation known as the Cooking Pot.

Enjoy dinner and an overnight rest at the Bujuku Hut (3977 m).

Climbing time estimated at 4.5-5 hours.

Wake up to nature and begin the day with a leisurely breakfast before beginning the day’s steep trek across the striking cliffs of the Rwenzori.  Climb further to reach the Elena Hut (4541 m), the base for our last ascent to the top of the Mountain Rwenzori.

Have dinner and an overnight stay at the Elena Hut.

Wake up early morning before sunrise, stroll cross the snow to Margherita peak (5109m). In case whether conditions are favorable then dusk finds you at the peak. Here you can take pictures. Descend to the Kitandara Lakes.

Meals and overnight at the Kitandara Hut 4,023m.

The descent gets you through striking views of the Congo and the alpine moss. Tracking proceeds across the Bujongolo and Kabamba rock shelters.

Usually this tour takes 6 hours to Guy Yeoman Hut, 3.261 m.

Start a 6 hours descent to Nyabitaba crossing the heather zone, Mobuku River and the Bamboo forest before you reach the last hut in the Mountains.
